Welcome Picnic & Ministry Fair

August 28 after 11am service

Let’s welcome everyone to the mountain, or back to the mountain, and celebrate beginning a brand new academic year together! The menu includes fried chicken, potato salad, baked beans, and watermelon. The sides will be potluck. Entertainment includes outdoor and indoor fun with games and activities for adults and children. Musicians are encouraged to bring instruments for bluegrass, jazz ensembles, hymn sings, and whatever else comes together.

The Welcome Picnic will include Otey’s annual Ministry Fair, offering information and registration for various ministries at the parish. For example, participants may learn about baking bread for Eucharist, arranging flowers, or serving in various lay ministries. Enroll students in Godly Play and Fire on the Mountain, and register for the canoe trip (Sept 11) and the Pilgrimage to Plains (Oct 8-9).

What to do now: We need commitment for outdoor games such as horse shoes, badminton, corn hole, and outdoor children’s activities. Email Jeannie atoteyformation@gmail.com.

Sign up for the potluck so we don’t end up with too much celery and no brownies.

Who to invite: Neighbors, colleagues, new and old friends, people who like to have fun, and people who need to remember.

What to bring: A side dish or dessert for potluck, outdoor toys (a Frisbee counts), musical instruments, perhaps a quilt or a camp chair.

Pilgrimage to Plains
with teaching by Jimmy Carter
Oct 8-9, 2016

Christian Formation is designing a pilgrimage to Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, culminating with a visit to President Carter’s Sunday school class. All ages are invited. We will leave very early the morning of Saturday, October 8th and return the next evening, Sunday, October 9th, stopping at couple of meaningful waypoints both directions. (No school missed, so a great trip for kids and teens!)

Details are still coming together, but we expect to celebrate Eucharist with other Episcopalians, visit the Carter farm, and build in some free time for dinner out, riding the train, or antique shopping. Most of all, we expect to grow closer to God and one another.

If you’ve never made the journey to Plains or heard President Carter teach the Bible, this is your chance to do so as part of Otey Parish. A small group of Sewanee friends drove down last August as sort of a Lectionary Class field trip, and found it well worth the journey.

We will post more details on the FaceBook page (see events!) and in the bulletin as plans come together. We will spend Saturday night at the historic Windsor Hotel in Americus, GA. We have reserved a block of rooms, but space was already limited, so please let me know right away if you would like to go. Room reservations will be first come, first serve. Please email oteyformation@gmail.com with “Plains” in the subject line.

Every blessing,

Jeannie Babb
Director of Christian Formation
